👋 Life update - I’ve moved back to Taipei!
Starting a new role this week and here’s my first month work plan
Hi everyone! It’s been a month since I last updated on Substack as it took time to move and settle down. Some changes big and small that I wanted to share with all of you:
✈️ I’ve moved back to Taipei to be closer to family, it was a tough decision but feels like the right one.
💼 I’ll be starting a new role at Uber Taipei this week, focused on merchant growth for Uber Eats.
✏️ I’m planning to write Substack in English going forward to reach wider audience and hopefully post at least bi-weekly.
Since I’ll be starting a new role, thought I’d share my plan for the first month of work. As I’d imagine many fresh grads are entering a new job this month as well, this might be helpful for them. I’ve done similar planning when I first joined Uber New York, shared in my previous post.
Here’s how I think about the first few months in a new role:
1st month: This will be a time of confusion so soak everything up like a sponge, focus on understanding key metrics for the team and the business context like merchant nuances.
3rd month: By now should be familiar with BAU tasks and processes, can start shifting focus to more strategic and longer-term projects.
6th month: Should have some business impact to show and demonstrate clear value-add to the team. Ideally contributing more than what they had hired you for.
So here’s a detailed break-down of what I plan to work on in the first month:
Learn from people
Create a list of people to speak with, set up 30 mins 1-1 sessions with each. Ask them questions like what is their team’s key metrics? What are they focused on in the next half (6 months)? What is the most challenging thing in their world right now?
Understand the baseline
Develop a baseline understanding of key metrics, top merchants and problem areas. For example, pull data for top merchants by gross booking, marketing cost and growth rate. It’ll help create a mental map of key numbers that’s important to the team.
Meet the clients
It’s a lot easier to meet the team and introduce yourself when you‘re new. Same applies to meeting with clients and merchants. I plan to spend time understanding what our top merchants care about and how delivery is incorporated into their business model.
Take on BAU task
Begin onboarding to BAU (Business as Usual) tasks. Especially if the role is not new then there will be operational tasks handed over from the last person. Understand the processes, key stakeholders and not just how but why these tasks are important. Can also think about opportunities for improvement in these processes.
Start thinking strategic
My role is in Strategy and Operations after all. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the operational piece as it’s often more urgent. But to create real business impact it’s important to think longer term and strategic. I’m urging myself to think more boldly in this new role and make bigger bets.
I’m honestly very excited to start a new role and be in the accelerated learning mode again. I will continue to share my journey in the new role as I progress. I think it’s a lot easier to share while it’s happening than in retrospect. Hopefully you will find it equally interesting and helpful!
Work aside, since I’m physically back in Taiwan now, I’m thinking about hosting some workshops and meeting people in person. More to come on this when I’m more settled in.
This month, I’m planning to attend AAC’s conference on July 26. If you’re in Taipei you can find the below information in Chinese, hope to see you there!
